A Disaster Recovery Plan is NOT an option!
Sooner or later your computer or file server will experience a serious failure that will make your data inaccessible or your system irrecoverable. This is because of the electro-mechanical nature of a hard disk drive, which gives it a finite power-on life cycle before it simply wears out completely. Moreover, there are numerous computer viruses, worms, trojans and other malware that are designed to attack the File Allocation Table on your hard drive that keeps track of where your files are physically located. Once the FAT is badly corrupted your files are essentially unrecoverable - they might as well not exist! Speaking of non-existent data files, what if your computer gets stolen or perishes in a fire, flood or other calamity?
All of these scenarios happen to hundreds of computer users every day somewhere in the world - and you could easily be next.
To protect yourself, you must practice the same daily backup regime that a large corporate data center utilizes to protect its digital assets. Fortunately, you have a lot less to protect so your backup routine can be relatively quick and painless. But first you need to identify the locations of all of your important data files and create a dataset inventory with a digital asset value assigned to each dataset.
Software Products
Here are some of the products that we recommend for the SMB computer market:
Zip Backup to CD
Zip Backup to CD is a data backup software designed to
backup your data files to CD/DVD, using the standard Zip file format, allowing
backup files to be viewed and restored with most zip file utilities.

Acronis TrueImage
TrueImage is a hard
disk imaging utility that makes a compressed image of an entire hard drive that
can be stored off-line on CD's or DVD's and then restored in the event of a
disaster. Optionally, individually selected files or directories can be restored
from the image archive.
