Drumming circles
are springing up in communities all across America, and for good reason:
drumming is a fun community gathering, it reduces stress & anger,
boosts the immune system, and induces pleasure and relaxation in all the
participants.
"Drumming is innate within us because
of our own inner rhythms - our heartbeats, our breathing, our brain
waves", says psychotherapist Robert Lawrence Friedman, author of The
Healing Power of the Drum. "The drumbeat can help people express
unarticulated emotions and reach deep levels of relaxation. It also frees
the spirit, and I'm a believer in the power of play to heal."
Maggie and I love attending our local
Waynesville Community Drum Circle, which meets every month at various
"drum friendly" locations. Young & old alike attend these
sessions, and Alan usually wears his sacred mask, straps on his dancing
bells, and gets folks in the mood to drum & dance together. If you
would like to experience one of our local drum circles, then check this
webpage for the next scheduled sessions.
But, by all means, check out a drum circle
in your own community or start one yourself. (Just remember to please find
a "drum friendly" location so you don't disturb your neighbors!)
