is dedicated to providing
enjoyable and educational outings whether your interest is
Birding, Wildflowers, Wildlife Photography, Natural Ecosystems,
or Scenic Drives.
A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE is designed to be an intimate experience. By keeping groups small we can insure that all guests receive personal attention. We are dedicated to the of native flora and fauna. We believe that to save the Goose, more people must experience the Golden Egg.

Don
Hendershot's love affair with nature began early, growing up
in the swamps and bayous of Louisiana.
His fascination with the outdoors led to a degree in Wildlife
Conservation
from Louisiana Tech University.
Don's
professional guiding career began as a hunting guide
in the marshes of South Louisiana.
A deep respect and profound appreciation for native flora and
fauna led Don
to seek a more compassionate outlet for sharing his knowledge and
love of nature.
Don Hendershot is:
owner-operator of A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE eco-tourism company
a weekly columnist (Naturalist's Corner) for The Enterprise Mountaineer in Waynesville and the Highlander in Highlands, NC.
a correspondent for Adventure in the Smokies - Guide to Western North Carolina
an outdoor writer for Smoky Mountain News
He has led and/or assisted bird walks for local Audubon Chapters, Carolina Bird Club, and informal birding groups.
He has taught Wildlife Management courses for Haywood Community College.
He is an active member of the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association and author of a poetry chapbook - "Applachian Jig."
Basic tours are trips in and around Western North Carolina.
Full Day Trip: Includes snacks, beverages, and vegetarian picnic lunch (advise of any special dietary needs). Full day trips begin at 8:30 a.m. and last approximately 8 hours. Cost $85
Half Day Trip: Includes snacks and beverages. Begin at 9 a.m. and last 4 hours. Cost $50
Basic tours have a central theme, i.e. birding, wildflowers, natural history, etc. Themes are flexible and depend on guests' interests, season and current events. They are designed to fit guests' level of expertise and experience.

Min. guests - Two (or fee-equivalent of two)
All basic tours are relaxed, non-strenuous outings. All tours are filled on a first come-first served basis. Deposit guarantees reservation.
A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE also offers Special Trips & Custom Tours. Special trips might include raptor migration at Hawk Mountain and/or Cape May or Winter Birding in South Louisiana. Call for pricing.
Custom
tours are designed by the guest.
Perhaps a quest for a life-bird or the chance to photograph a
rare wildflower, or a particular trail you would like to hike.
